Knowing Where to Start: Selecting the Perfect Niche

Whenever you are looking to create a new website or start a new business, it’s important to figure out which niche is best for you. You want to not only choose something that is going to be beneficial to you financially but something that is going to be enjoyable. Going to work each day should not be something you dread, it should be something you look forward to. When you are working with the proper niche, it feels as though you aren’t working at all.

Make a List of Your Interests

Before thinking too in-depth about which niche to go with, sit down and create a list of all the things you enjoy in life. Do not worry about whether or not they can be used to create a website and throw all the negative thoughts, such as “that’s impossible” out of your mind. Let your mind flow free and take a look at your list once you have finished. Is there a reoccurring theme? Maybe you like helping others or you enjoy working with children.

Go through your list and circle the items that you are most passionate about. These are going to be your main focus. Later on, you may find a way to incorporate the other options into your site but start with the basics for now.

Use Your Experiences and Skills

Do you have specific skills or experience that is going to help you with your website? If so, be sure to make these known to your followers. This is going to make you more credible to your visitors and give them reason to trust you right off the bat.

If you are going to be taking on a niche that you have not yet been a part of then you are in luck because you are going to be a part of your target audience. As you research and prepare your website, you can take all the information you’re learning along the way and pass it on to your visitors.

Explore Your Options

There are a wide range of websites on the internet and many of them may be directly related to the site you are planning to start up. One way to get a good idea of just how much competition you have out there is to use the Google AdSense Keyword Tool. All you have to do is type in a keyword or phrase and a list of websites that relate will pop up. Information such as the level of competition and number of searches each month will appear. This is also going to give you an idea how many people are interested in your topic. Sometimes a simple tweak to your keyword or key phrase can drastically lower the amount of competition you have. Play around with the keyword tool a bit and you’ll see what we mean.

Know Your Competition

Once you have broken down what you think your main keyword is going to be, it’s time to scope out the competitors. Take a look at various websites on the list and see what kinds of things they have going for them. Take note of the colors they have chosen to use, how their website is organized, if they have a chat room etc. Basically, what you are trying to do is get a general idea as to what works for your target audience. What types of things do you like about these sites? Are there things you think you could do better?

Don’t be afraid to take inspiration from others and use it to make your own creation. The same goes for creating your own ideas that you have never seen before. Sometimes taking a chance can be scary but who knows; you could create something that could change the way people design their websites.

Content is King

Whenever you have a website, content is extremely important. You might have a really useful website but if you are not updating on a regular basis then you are doing yourself and your website a disservice. People who come to your site are going to be turned off if you have not made any changes to your site in – say – over a month. This is why it’s extremely important that you choose a niche that you feel comfortable with and are passionate about. You do not want to get to a point where you feel as though you have run out of things to say.

Take a good look at the niche you are considering and think about it over the long term. Is this something that is going to change? Are you going to feel comfortable with writing about it at least a few times a month? Even if your website isn’t focused on writing, it’s always good to at least have a blog within your site to have something to continually promote.
